How to Make Buying a Home in Los Angeles a More Stress Free Experience

You are finally on the way to buying a home in Los Angeles and have started to scour the internet for properties. All you are going to need is the internet right, after all the home of your dreams is going to pop up and beg you to come visit. Not so fast. That is as easy as it gets looking at a home online and deciding that’s the one and all you have to do is pick up the phone and call the listing agent to show it to you.

Not so fast. Chances are you are not going to find the listing agent even though their name and brokerage is identified on the listing. The person you will be calling may be a random agent who has paid to be featured next to a listing, in the case of a site like Zillow, or someone like me who features listings from the MLS on their website. There is nothing wrong with either but you are going to be better served by picking an agent before you start a search so that they can help you through the whole process, including selecting the right property.

There is a possibility the home you are interested is not one that is going to meet your needs for one reason or another. It may be next to a freeway, or it may be across from a school. There may be another reason it is not the right property. Your agent is going to help you narrow down your choices which is going to save a lot of time and disappointment.

Another factor to take into consideration is, let’s say you see a few homes you are interested in and start making calls for showings, you are likely going to be calling several different agents leading to logistical hurdles to overcome, especially if you are coming in from out-of-town and don’t know the area. Believe me, setting up multiple showings in a city like Los Angeles takes a lot of maneuvering and patience.

  • How long area you going to spend at each home?
  • What is the travel time between each home? You need to account for the weather near the ocean which will make touring that area a little harder since it is going to be a beach day with the related traffic or there is going to be a road closure in your area. L.A. traffic is not great at the best of times.
  • Which homes are going to be open and which require an appointment with the listing agent? And heaven forbid all the homes require an appointment, because then you are left on the day trying to juggle your schedule when you run over at one home.
  • Then of course you have the problem of having booked many of the appointment times only to find out that the last one cannot accommodate your schedule, and you have to go back and start again.

Putting yourself in the hands of an agent to go through the process of buying a home in L.A. really is the best way to go. It makes things so much easier and stress free, at least for the buyer.
